“He makes me lie down in green pastures.” Psalm 23:2

Writer: Angie LakeAngie Lake

The 23rd Psalm is a Psalm most everyone knows.  “The Lord is my Shepard, I shall not want.”  Psalm 23:1  As familiar as this Psalm is the second verse came as a shock to me when I read it one day.  My husband, Kenny and I were in an auto accident in June of 1983.  We were not seriously injured, yet now when I read in the newspaper, someone is not seriously injured, simply had multiple cuts and bruises, I have a lot more sympathy than before.  In our accident I was cut above my eye and my body had no broken bones but I was very, very sore!  A couple of days after the accident I was ready for my prayer time and picked up a favorite devotional of mine and was astounded to read, “He makes me lie down in green pastures.” Psalm 23:2  Now, that was the first time I had ever understood that Psalm in that way!  He makes  us lie down?  Well, I thought, “I have really been so busy about doing God’s work that to get my attention God had to make me lie down.”  My body did not allow anything else at that time.  It was at that point in my life that my prayer life was changed dramatically by God and I began to simply sit in His presence and love Him and let Him love me.  It was kind of like changing from a Martha to a Mary in one day!  Thank you Lord, you always know what we need.  I encourage you to let God be God and to surrender to His care.  He is the Good Shepard and knows what we need.
